The Laboratory of Materials Physics at F&M is dedicated to providing undergraduate students with the opportunity to participate in the exciting field of materials research. The primary emphasis in the lab is on the fluorescent properties of impurity ions embedded into metal oxide matrices using a wet chemical (sol-gel) process.

The fluorescence properties of the impurities are studied to gain an understanding of the structural and dynamic properties of the metal oxide hosts. By better understanding the fundamental properties, we identify the important obstacles that must be overcome prior to commercialization of these novel materials.
